about me
about me

Hi my name is Joe, welcome to my Personal Training studio. Here's a bit of me I'd like to share with you.
I spent over 40 years working as an Insurance Broker — long hours, high pressure, and more time at a desk than I care to admit. For most of that career, the one constant that kept me sane, grounded and physically capable was exercising.
In my twenties, that passion took me all the way to the bodybuilding stage — competing twice and discovering just how much the human body can achieve with the right training and commitment. I never forgot that lesson.
Over the decades, like many people, I felt the effects of a sedentary working life — the stiffness and creeping loss of energy, the sense that your body is working against you rather than for you. Training became and continues to be not just a habit but a lifeline.
I understand, first-hand, what it takes to keep going when motivation dips and the aches make it tempting to stop.
Eventually, I had enough of crowded commercial gyms — the equipment hogging, the endless wait for a machine, and the sight of people scrolling through TikTok or filming themselves rather than actually training. So I channelled my decades of experience into building my own private home studio: a proper, well-equipped training environment designed for focus rather than self-admiration.
Now retired, I have taken that studio and turned it into something more meaningful: a place where other people in their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond can exercise, feel supported, and rediscover what their body is still capable of. I chose to formally qualify as a personal trainer — earning my PT Level 3 Diploma and a specialist Level 3 Award in Exercise for Older Adults — because I wanted to bring professional knowledge to go alongside lived experience. Decades of training taught me a great deal. My qualifications taught me the rest.
I am not a young trainer who has read about ageing in a textbook. I am living it — and I am still training through it. That is the difference
my mission
PERSONAL TRAINING THAT FITS YOU!

To empower adults 40+ to build strength and fitness, move freely, and live with confidence — creating a healthier, more energised version of themselves that lasts a lifetime.
I believe it is never too late to get fitter and stronger. As a trainer in my mid 60s, I have walked this road myself. I understand the challenges, the aches, the self-doubt and I know what it takes to come back stronger, because I did it.
Above all, I want this to be enjoyable. I am not a drill sergeant and this is not a boot camp. Training should feel rewarding, even fun — something you genuinely look forward to rather than dread. I will push you, yes, but always within your limits and always with a smile. And if there is something you positively hate doing, we simply will not do it. There are always other ways to get where you want to go.
My commitment is to provide expert, empathetic, personalised coaching in a safe and welcoming private home studio — where your goals, your pace, and your wellbeing always come first.

The Components of Fitness
Your programme will be designed to address the key components of fitness relevant to your goals and physical needs and limitations. All elements are tailored to your current ability, any medical considerations, and what you are working towards. Below is a general overview of each component and how improving it benefits you.
01
Cardiovascular Endurance
The efficiency of your heart and lungs to provide oxygen to your body during sustained physical activity. Reduces risk of heart disease, lowers blood pressure, improves energy levels and stamina in daily
02
Muscular Strength
The maximum amount of force a muscle can produce in a single effort — Protects joints, improves posture, supports bone density andreduces injury risk.
03
Muscular Endurance
The ability of your muscles to perform repetitive tasks over an extended period without fatiguing prematurely.
04
Flexibility
The range of motion available around your joints.
Reduces stiffness and discomfort, improves posture, decreases injury risk and supports quality of movement.
05
balance
The ability to maintain equilibrium both statically and dynamically.
Critical for fall prevention, postural control and confidence — particularly important as we age.
A Typical Session — What to Expect
Sessions typically last 45 to 60 minutes and are carefully structured to maximise effectiveness while prioritising safety. Every session is personalised to your specific goals, fitness level, physical limitations and preferences. I want this to be something you enjoy (at least grow to enjoy) and look forward to!
The structure below represents a general framework — your session may look different depending on where you are in your training cycle and what you are looking to achieve.
1. The Check-In & warm up (10 Minutes)
We start every session with a quick chat about how you’re feeling, any new aches or pains.
Light cardiovascular activity to raise heart rate, increase blood flow to the muscles and prepare the body for exercise. Typically walking on the treadmill at a comfortable pace, progressing gently in intensity.
2. Dynamic stretching (5 Minutes)
Active stretching movements that take joints through their full range of motion.
3. steady state cardio (10-15 Minutes)
Low to moderate intensity cardiovascular exercise comfortably challenging, able to hold a conversation. This builds aerobic base and burns calories without fatiguing the muscles before resistance work.
4. Resistance Training (20 Minutes)
This is where the real progress happens. I focus on functional movements that mirror everyday activities.
—squats, hinges, pushes, and pulls—that build bone density and real-world strength. I prioritise perfect form over heavy weight, ensuring every lift is safe and effective for your body.
5. Accessory & Corrective Work (5 Minutes)
Once the heavy work is done, we move into targeted exercises to fix imbalances, strengthen your core, and improve your balance. These smaller, focused movements are key to staying injury-free and moving with confidence outside the gym.
We finish with guided stretching and deep breathing to bring your heart rate down and kickstart your recovery. It’s also time for a final review of the session and any homework or lifestyle tips for the days until our next meeting.
6. Cool Down & Maintenance (5 Minutes)
Sixty minutes of focused work that leaves you feeling stronger, taller, and ready for whatever life throws at you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Beginning a new fitness program is a significant step, especially if you haven’t trained for a while or are managing health conditions. Here are the most common questions I get from adults 40+ starting their journey at Vintage Strength.
I have never trained before. Am I too out of shape to start?
Absolutely not — and this is probably the most common thing I hear. The truth is that the less fit you are right now, the more quickly you will see and feel results. Every programme I design starts from where you are, not from where I might ideally like you to be. Your first session will be nothing like a fitness video you have seen online. It will be measured, safe and entirely appropriate for your current level. The only requirement to get started is a willingness to try.
I am in my 60s (or 70s). Is it too late to make a real difference?
No — and the science is unambiguous on this. The body responds to exercise stimulus at any age. You can build muscle, improve cardiovascular fitness, increase bone density and improve balance in your 60s, 70s and beyond. The rate of progress may differ from someone in their 30s, but the progress is real and measurable. I am in my mid-sixties myself and I train regularly — I am living proof that this works. My specialist qualification in Exercise for Older Adults means I understand precisely how to train this age group safely and effectively.
I have a health condition or injury. Can I still train with you?
In many cases, yes — and appropriate exercise is often one of the best things you can do for a chronic condition. Before we begin, you will complete a PAR-Q health screening questionnaire. If anything in your history suggests we need GP clearance first, I will advise you on that before any exercise takes place. Once cleared, I design your programme around your condition rather than ignoring it — modifying exercises, managing intensity and monitoring how your body responds. If at any point I feel a condition requires medical expertise beyond my scope, I will refer you accordingly. Your safety always comes first.
How many sessions per week do I need?
For most clients starting out, two sessions per week is ideal — enough to create consistent stimulus for the body to adapt, while leaving adequate rest and recovery between sessions. Three sessions per week is a strong programme for those who can commit to it. We will discuss what is realistic for your schedule and lifestyle during the consultation and build a plan around that. Consistency over time always beats intensity in short bursts — two sessions a week, every week, will always outperform five sessions a week for a month followed by nothing.
What is the studio like? Will I feel comfortable there?
My studio is a private, well-equipped home gym in Turners Hill — built specifically because I grew frustrated with the atmosphere of commercial gyms. There is no queue for equipment, no one filming themselves in the mirror, no intimidating environment. It is just the two of us, focused on your session. Many of my clients have told me that training in a private space completely removes the self-consciousness they associate with gyms. You are welcome to visit before committing to anything — just come for a free coffee chat and have a look around.
How long before I start to see results?
Most people feel a difference before they see one. Within two to three weeks of consistent training, energy levels typically improve and sleep quality often gets better. Visible changes to body composition usually begin to show from four to eight weeks, depending on starting point, training frequency and lifestyle factors. Strength improvements tend to be measurable from around the four-week mark. We track progress formally every four to six weeks so you always have objective evidence of what is changing — even when the mirror is slow to catch up.
Will the sessions be very intense? I do not want to be left unable to walk the next day.
No — and I want to be clear about this. Leaving someone exhausted, in pain or dreading the next session is not good training, it is poor coaching. Sessions are designed to be challenging enough to create progress, but not so demanding that they leave you wiped out. Intensity is built gradually over weeks, not thrown at you in week one. Some muscle soreness in the early sessions is normal and will ease as your body adapts. You will leave sessions feeling worked, not broken.
How much do you charge?
Honestly, this is not something I lose sleep over. I am retired, I have built my studio for the love of training, and my motivation for doing this is genuinely about giving something back to my community — not building a business empire. I want to help people, and I do not want cost to be the reason someone decides not to start.
My rates are very reasonable and I offer a range of flexible packages — whether you are looking for a single session to see how it feels, a block of sessions or something in between. If you have a budget in mind, tell me and we will find something that works. The conversation costs nothing, and there is never any pressure.
How do I get started?
The easiest first step is to book a free 30-minute ‘Coffee & Get to Know’ chat. There is no commitment, no hard sell and no expectation that you will sign up on the day. It is simply a relaxed conversation about where you are now, where you want to be, and whether I am the right person to help you get there. You can use the contact form, call or text me on 07824 864587 or email joejsoto@gmail.com any time. I look forward to hearing from you.
Nutrition & Recovery
- Prioritising high-quality protein to support muscle repair and metabolic health.
- Understanding the role of inflammation and choosing whole, nutrient-dense foods.
- Valuing sleep as the most powerful recovery tool in your arsenal.
Beyond the Studio — Fitness as a Lifestyle
Fitness doesn’t begin and end at the studio door. True health for adults over 40 is built on the habits and choices made in the 23 hours a day when you aren’t training. Here is what we can focus on outside our sessions to ensure your progress is sustainable and life-changing.
One of the most important shifts in mindset clients make is moving from viewing fitness as something they are doing temporarily, towards embracing it as part of who they are. Clients who build sustainable habits are far less likely to return to a sedentary lifestyle once an initial goal is achieved.
As part of your programme, we will explore and develop habits in the following areas:
daily Movement
- Increasing daily non-exercise movement (NEAT) to keep joints fluid and burn energy.
- Reducing prolonged sitting through regular movement breaks
Mindset
- Moving from a short-term 'fix' mindset to a long-term 'lifestyle' commitment.
- Managing the stressors that can derail physical progress and mental wellbeing.
- Redefining what it means to age with strength, mobility, and independence.
Please Reach Out, I'm actually quite nice!
